A very particular face
I painted this picture trying to give shape to a presence, more than a simple character.
I wanted the face to emerge from the canvas with a direct gaze, almost provocative, as if it knew something that we don't know. The top hat, the high collar and the sharp expression recall an ancient, theatrical, slightly decadent world, where elegance and mystery coexist at the same time.
I chose deliberately vintage colors: worn golds, browns, burnt reds, deep blues and cold shadows.
I was interested in creating the impression of a painting that had already passed through time, like a portrait found in a forgotten room, but still capable of speaking forcefully to those who observe it.
The background is not just decoration: it is a living, warm, precious material, almost worn out by the years.
Around the face I left signs, veils and contrasts to vibrate, so that the character seemed to emerge from a distant memory, suspended between reality, gothic fairy tale and imagination.
I wanted the face, however, to be colder, more hollow, more intense.
It is there that all the tension of the work is concentrated.
I didn't want a reassuring expression, but a gaze that remained with me, that put the painting into dialogue with those who pass in front of it.
For me this work tells the charm of ambiguity: it does not explain everything, it does not immediately reveal its story.
He is an elegant, ironic, perhaps melancholic, perhaps restless character.
A man from another era who seems to observe the present with detachment, intelligence and a subtle sense of challenge.
It is a painting created not to go unnoticed.
You don't simply want to furnish a space, but live in it. He wants to create a presence, a small visual mystery, a figure capable of changing slightly every time you look at it.
